Bozburun Turkey [View Map] |
Located in Bozburun at the heart of the Turkish turquoise coast with easy access to the Aegean Islands this yacht was purpose built to explore this wonderful cruising ground. Particular emphasis in the design was to produce a boat which is easy to sail for a couple or single hand and also to minimise annual running costs.
The benign conditions that prevail here dictate that shelter from the sun is of more importance than protection from rain. The layout is deep safe open plan cockpit with when needed a simply erected tent cover for sleeping beneath.
Hull designed by Nigel Irens, sail system by Alan Boswell. It was professionally built locally by a well know local yard who produce quality boats.

The main body of the boat is a deep cockpit area and safety is further enhanced by robust stainless steel railings.
The sail controls are located at the base of the mast at the forward part of the cockpit.
A simple Galley with Oreigo alcohol cooker, together with storage for all catering needs for two people.
Toilet ( non marine) and fridge.
Two large heavy duty water tanks are connected to provide hot and cold water to a shower at the top of the boarding ladder and at the galley.
Beneath the two comfortable berths reached from two water tight hatches is excellent dry storage.
Over the aft area there are two forward facing seats either side of the wheel steering and engine box. This is all covered by a Stainless Steel and Sunbrella covering and 'zip in' sides which give excellent protection form the sun . This supports the roll out tent of sun protective covering and ( unlikely ) rain protection over the rest of the open cockpit.
There is a lightweight Summer overall cover when on mooring.
The detail of the construction is best described in the video above which was produced by a friend in the course of the boat build and early sailing.
The ribs are of laminated African Mahogany and the .25 mm strip planking glued with Collano AG Semparoc , the world leading marine glue.
There is a 4 ton encapsulated lead keel and the whole hull has been covered in two layers of epoxy impregnated Glass Fibre cloth to give a hard completely waterproof finish. This has been filled and sanded endlessly to produce a superb stable paint finish with high gloss.
The hull has the exterior appearance of a new GRP hull with the same weather proofing and durable finish but with the strength and rigidity of traditional wood construction.
There are watertight compartment forward, aft and beneath the bunks. Apart from the forward compartment these are accessible by watertight hatches and provide dry storage for clothes , charts bedding etc . These compartments provide positive buoyancy for the hull.
Just aft of the mast and forward of the keel there is a non ballasted centre board to improve sailing performance.
A particular feature of the design is the larger transom hung rudder with winglets in the lower segment. Hydraulic steering is controlled by a wheel.
There is a trim tab fitted to the rudder for wind vane steering or if under motor, control by Tiller pilot.
Two 200 watt solar panels and two service batteries with 200 a/h.
Stainless delta anchor and 50 m of stainless chain, 'Quick' electric capstain winch.
Spare Aluminium Fortress Anchor
Additional manual winch.
Automatic Electric bilge pump and manual pump.
Mooring lines and 12 mm multiplait floating line for mooring or additional anchor warp.
Steel 4 wheel trailer for launching, recovery and winter storage. With the mast out the boat can be moved to non marine land for winter storage for significantly less cost.
Full heavy duty winter cover.
2.5m rubber dinghy plus electric outboard motor
Masthead wind vane sensor together with Airmar speed depth and water temperature try data sensor. these are connected by NMEA200 network to a Multiplexer which through a router distributes the Wifi over a LAN . Navigation is easy with tablet or phone using Navionics or similar programme.
Compass and tri colour masthead light together with Anchor light
CM2.16 Marine Diesel Engine
Built on a trusted Mitsubishi industrial engine, the CM2.16 delivers proven performance worldwide and comes with reliable global support for worry-free sailing; a dependable marine diesel engine for boat builders, dealers, and distributors who need consistent supply and long-term backup.
Seawater resistant cast exhaust bend, providing a long and efficient service life.

Based on a Mitsubishi industrial engine, proven world-wide and with an equally world-wide support.
Complies with RCD II regulations.
The original rig and sail was as a modern Chinese Junk with hinged aluminium battens. this sail and rig is still available and performs really well and is very easy to sail with.
I am however building a 78' three masted schooner and decided to have this rigged with Wingsails which would be controlled by captive winches for sheets and halliards. I therefore used Tralala latterly to trial, develop and fine tune the wingsails. This has proved to be very successful and is how she is currently rigged.
The Wingsail is simple low tech solution providing very efficient sailing performance on a self supporting Aluminium mast. The stresses from this system are very light and there is no need for winching in sheets when tacking or gybing.
All that is necessary is to put over the helm and the sail passes over the boat and without fuss and certainly with no winching, she moves off on the new course.
The with no stays or wires the mast is easily dismounted and stored on the trailer.
