UTOPIA II was seen to be a Sea Chief 38 - a twin engined flybridge cruiser, built by the
Sea Chief Yacht Company, Taiwan, in approximately 1979.
4.1.2. The hull of UTOPIA II was of the long-keel, displacement type with a deep forefoot.
She had a square transom, with a stainless steel bathing platform (not fitted). The hull
& keel were moulded in one piece with hand laid GRP, made up of polyester resin,
mixed-strand fibreglass mat and woven rovings. The entire hull surface was finished
with a white pigmented gel-coat. Blue paint had been applied along the upper parts of
both topsides.
4.1.3. The deck moulding was a balsa or foam and plywood cored GRP composite, finished
with white pigmented gel-coat. It incorporated the decks, forward coachroof, aft cabin
coachroof and the sides of the wheelhouse. The decks were finished with teak
planking. The planking was swept laid, with a nibbed king plank.
4.1.4. The twin rudders were of the balanced spade type, each constructed from a stainless
steel stock welded to a stainless steel blade. The hydraulically operated steering was
controlled from wheels in the wheelhouse and on the flybridge. UTOPIA II had a 12
volts d.c. electrical system, with two batteries for engine starting and three batteries for
service power. Battery charging was from the alternator on each engine, from a single
solar panel or from shore power through a battery charger.
4.1.5. Accommodation was well laid out, with a kitchen in the forepeak. Aft of this area was a
shower cubicle on the port side. Steps lead up to an enclosed wheelhouse & seating
area. The engine compartment was beneath the wheelhouse sole. Steps from the
wheelhouse lead down to a large aft cabin, with en-suite toilet and sink. Steps from the
aft deck lead upwards to the flybridge.
The kitchen and bathrooms are fully equipped. All lights are in working order. Water hose and ropes are all available.
The cabins all have curtains. All rooms are heated with a radiator connected to the mains.
All navigation equipment is available.
Navigation equipment is all there but needs checking for navigation
UTOPIA II was fitted with twin Ford Watermota Sea Lion, 2715E, 6.22 litre, direct
injection, six cylinder diesel engines, with fresh water cooling, each driving a single
bronze, three blade propeller through a Velvet Drive reduction gearbox. Engine control
was via two sets of twin levers, giving forward & reverse gears and throttle control,
mounted next to the helm in the wheelhouse and next to the flybridge helm.
The sail would need setting up again. Mast is in place.
Fire extinguishers are all in place. Marina safety and mooring equipement all in place
